Everyone else, thank you for your continued participation in Journey To Excellence.

Thank you for your interest in our poll.  The poll is now closed.

Our district is going to expand its borders and we will
welcome our friends and fellow scouters in Charles County.
While we are close to 2,800 scouts and about 1,200 adult
leaders we will be stronger with the 750 scouts and their
leaders as we join together.

NCAC, our governing body on this issue, determined it was
in everyone’s best interest for this to occur and we are
working our way through it slowly and methodically. We
have already had our first meeting led by our Scout
Executive, Stephen Allen. While there are many issues such
as when and where do we meet, who meets, who leads, the
financial considerations and many others. It will be a
problem of logistics that we will manage and hopefully
accommodate everyone. What is important is that every
scout knows that we care, and our support for them and our
program continues to be “top notch”. As a result of the
meeting we are considering changing the name of our new
district.  Take the Survey. Eventually, we will have
to redesign our district uniform patch. We will make a final
decision as a group once we have vetted the name. We will
consider all the “metrics” as well about what night and
where and make sure the meetings are centrally located
and accommodate the most possible.

I ask for your help and your understanding as we undertake
this journey to being bigger, and I hope better.

Please give a warm welcome to our new friends whenever
you can. It is what we do. We are scouts!

I recently read in the Washington Post the story of a young scout who I like to think of as one of our own.

At the time, he was one of America’s most famous boy scouts. In 1939 Donn Fendler survived for nine days on a remote mountain in Maine. His family was on vacation from their home in Rye, NY to hike Mount Katahdin, Maine’s tallest peak. Part way through the climb, fog set in. Donn, 12, became separated from his family as a storm began. A search was initiated, where hundreds of police officers, firefighters, Forest Wardens, National Guard, and volunteers searched in vain for over a week.

He remembered his scout training that said when lost follow a stream to civilization. After 9 days, he came across a hunting lodge. He was 35 miles from where he lost his family.

He said he survived “on his faith in God and his will to live – along with pointers from the scouts”. He gathered berries during the day and slept in a burlap bag he found on the trail. Somehow he lost his shoes and what was left of his clothing, were in shreds. He even lost part of a toe. To keep his cool, he developed a routine: early bed and say his prayers.

He was recognized by the Governor of Maine as the “most courageous boy in America” and President Franklin Roosevelt presented him with a medal for valor. Five years to the day he went missing, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. He later wrote a book “Lost on a Mountain in Maine”. A major motion picture was said to be in the works.

When we say “Prepared for Life” we mean it. I know that each of you does as well. I know that you do great things for the scouts, please keep it up.

We are moving quickly toward the day when we go over the top and reach the Gold Level of scouting. By December 31, 2016 we have to have our house in order and all of our accounting done. We appear to have fulfilled most requirements for the gold designation with a few exceptions we need to work on. Our overall scout numbers are good this year. Last year this kept us from moving up. On the other hand we appear to have a shortfall in fund raising, unlike last year where we surpassed our fund raising goal.

Prince George’s County students can receive Student Learning Service Hours for their participation by advising the staff at the time of registration.  Student Learning Service Hours Forms will be distributed at the end of the event.

This is an excellent opportunity for Scout units to show a community how Scouting can help communities grow since we don’t have a Scout unit in this neighborhood.

This month our newsletter honors the passing of one of our finest, Bob Leek.
He was a long time scouter. He began at the bottom, as we all do, and he
rose to the rank of Eagle Scout. He never forgot how important that it is to
give back in life to those that help you. Scouting was his pride and I think joy. (Click here to Read More)
